Compassionate, Evidence-Based Therapy in Princeton, NJ
"Stop it, and give yourself a chance."
-Aaron Beck
Welcome! I’m Joe Keifer, owner of Princeton Counseling and Psychotherapy. I know that everyone’s path to wellness is different, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to healing. That’s why I focus on creating a caring, collaborative space where you feel heard, supported, and understood.
In our sessions, we’ll work together to explore what’s on your mind and find strategies that truly fit your goals and your life. My hope is to help you recognize your strengths, build resilience, and move forward with confidence.
If you’re ready to take that next step, I’d love to meet you—whether in person or virtually. Reach out today, and let’s begin this journey together.
Process
01
Initial Meeting
In order to work together to achieve your goals, it's important to make sure we work well together. I provide all potential clients a free 15-20 minute meeting. During this meeting we will discuss your challenges, goals, and aspirations. I will also share my professional background and potential ways I might support you.
02
Assessment
Prior to starting therapy I will conduct an intake interview and provide you with assessment measures to complete in order to get a better picture of your life and challenges. This will help guide our work together, identify areas of strength and growth, and allow us to track your progress!
03
Treatment
Our sessions will be designed to meet your specific needs and life circumstances. Often, I will suggest or develop strategies for you to use outside of the therapy session. As treatment progresses we will reassess and discuss potentially modifying the approach or bringing our work to a close.
Therapeutic Approaches
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT is a structured, goal-oriented approach that assists individuals in recognizing and altering thought patterns and behaviors contributing to distress. By focusing on the connection between thoughts, feelings, and actions, CBT empowers individuals to develop healthier coping mechanisms and practical skills for managing challenges. It is evidence-based and widely used to treat conditions like anxiety, depression, and stress, often showing results in a relatively short period.
Recovery-Oriented Cognitive Therapy (CT-R)
CT-R is designed to support individuals with serious mental health conditions by focusing on their strengths, aspirations, and goals. It emphasizes fostering hope, resilience, and engagement by identifying and building positive beliefs and behaviors. CT-R is collaborative and focuses on reframing challenges, building meaningful connections, and pursuing valued life activities.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT is a mindfulness-based approach that helps individuals embrace their thoughts and feelings rather than fighting or avoiding them. It focuses on developing psychological flexibility through encouraging acceptance of the present moment while committing to actions aligned with personal values. It is evidence-based widely used for managing conditions such as anxiety, depression, and chronic pain.
About Us
We strive to provide evidence-based approaches that are tailored to the individual needs and preferences of our clients, and to involve them in every step of the treatment process, from setting goals to evaluating progress. We are committed to creating a culture of respect, collaboration, and inclusivity, where clients feel heard, valued, and understood, regardless of their background or circumstances.
