Parent Coaching

I work with parents and families to help navigate the challenges of supporting a child or young adult who is experiencing a mental health crisis. Together, we will discuss strategies to strengthen your connection with your child, improve communication, and address specific concerns. My approach is flexible, incorporating techniques like goal setting, problem-solving, and skill-building to create a positive home environment.

Specialty Populations

While I work with a wide range of individuals and families I specialize in working with the following:

  • Individuals with Serious Mental Health Challenges
  • Families living with an individual with a serious mental health challenge
  • Medical Providers and First Responders
  • Complex Medical Challenges

Serious Mental Health Challenges

I specialize in working with individuals who have been given a diagnosis of a serious mental health condition (e.g., psychosis, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder) or individuals who may have experiences that are difficult to understand and may not be shared by others in the community. I aim to work collaboratively, putting the relationship first, and create a treatment plan that builds hope and purpose, increases connection in the community, and helps the client to take steps toward life goals and values.

Family Consultation and Support

I offer consultations for families navigating complex or serious mental health challenges (e.g., schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder) with their loved one. Together, we’ll explore strategies, interventions, and resources for managing stress, addressing stigma, and facilitating family collaboration with the aim of strengthening relationships, promoting resilience, and enhancing overall well-being. I help families understand Recovery-Oriented Cognitive Therapy and other evidenced-based therapies and their application to the family system in fostering recovery.

Medical Providers and First Responders

Healthcare providers (e.g., physicians, nurses, first responders) face challenges, trauma, and stress in the workplace that can be difficult to explain and talk about. Talking with a person who has experienced these situations firsthand can make the journey easier. Your career is important to you and your family. Managing these challenges using evidenced based therapy enables you to get back to your passion, doing the work you love, and restores a sense of purpose to your life. As a nurse, EMT, and spouse of a physician, I know first hand the challenges in becoming (e.g. medical school, board exams) and working as a clinician and first responder (e.g., burnout, stress, work-life balance).

First Responders

Complex Medical Challenges

Complex medical challenges can be accompanied by significant mental health challenges. Speaking with a therapist who has an understanding of medical conditions and uses evidenced-based therapy is crucial to developing workable solutions that balance medical needs and optimize wellness, hope, and purpose. My background in critical care and psychiatric nursing informs my work as a psychotherapist when working with clients experiencing both medical and mental health challenges.

Everyone’s treatment is individualized – the goal of therapy is to get you back to your life, and doing more of what is important to you. Your goals and values will serve as a guide to help us determine when treatment is finished. Treatment can be brief  (<13 sessions) or longer, a year or more, depending on what you hope to accomplish.

Sessions are designed to meet your needs and goals for therapy. Sessions are typically between 45 and 60 minutes long. However, we might hold shorter or longer sessions depending on your specific needs and presenting issues.

Using evidence-based therapy is essential because it ensures that treatment approaches are grounded in rigorous scientific research and proven to be effective. These therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) or dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), are designed to address specific mental health challenges with techniques that have been tested and validated in diverse populations. Evidence-based practices provide a higher likelihood of achieving positive outcomes, promote consistency and accountability in treatment, and allow therapists to tailor interventions to individual needs while adhering to established guidelines. By prioritizing methods with demonstrated efficacy, you will receive care that is not only ethical but also efficient and aligned with the latest advancements in psychological science.
